The role of pets.

BACK TO TEACHINGS

Our animal companions often play a huge role in our lives. Growing up I had hamsters, budgies, a rabbit and a dog. And currently, the count is two dogs and two cats, although I can see some more little friends being around in the future. So why do we feel the pull to bring these wonderful beings into our lives and what purpose do they serve (apart from being bundles of love and joy)?

I think the first point that I wish to make in this regard is about companionship. In a world where the majority of people are feeling both increasingly busy (distracted) and disconnected from everyone else (exacerbated by the often superficial connection that social media provides), having an animal companion around provides something that many people are lacking; the security and consistency of unconditional love that another being such as this provides. Having this connection to an often seemingly unlimited supply of love (as long as adequate treats are provided, obviously) can be a wonderful experience for anyone. I’ve often seen many stories of lovely people saying that having their connection with their little (or sometimes big) buddy has not only changed their life, but also saved it.

The love that we have for our animal companions and that they share back with us is also mentioned in this, the second point. If you’ve read my other teachings, you will see that I believe that our true selves exist at the vibration of universal unconditional love. Therefore, I believe that life is a process of learning, expanding and enlightening ourselves to “be” more of this unconditional love… or to be our true selves. One of the quickest ways to get there is through sharing experiences of unconditional love. Animals tend to open our hearts and with a lot of people, often much more than we allow with other humans. Many people have experienced hurt from another human, so they tend to form conditions to their love; conditions that do not exist, on the whole, with their animal companions. So because a lot of us allow our love to flow better with animals, it becomes very beneficial to have this consistent access to unconditional love around us, because it keeps us more intimately connected to our true selves.

The last point that I feel guided to make in this teaching is about the learning our furry, fluffy and feathered friends provide. Animals, because of their nature and energetic sensitivity, are often our clearest mirrors. They react to our emotions almost instantly and sometimes know how we are feeling before we do! If we feel nervous or scared, our animals will usually react by either being more protective or by being more alert and fearful themselves. If we are sad, then, as I’m sure many of you will have experienced, they will often try to comfort us or will feel the sadness themselves and will display it in another way. In this way, our animals are there to teach us through their behaviour and their mirroring reactions to our energy. Many times I have helped improve the behaviour of an animal through my animal communication by simply advising the owner as to what energy the animal is reacting to. Once the energy is changed, the behaviour of the animal is also significantly altered, if not totally rectified.

If you are lucky enough to have an animal companion in your life, then please remember to give love and gratitude for their simply being with you. It might not always seem like it, but they chose you just as much as you chose them.
